"Place of Salt"
A MUST-SEE, especially during winter. Hallstatt is well-known for its picturesque view of the mountains and the lake.
For 30€ round-trip, one can travel there on Bus 150 followed by a train ride from Bad Ischl to either the Obertraun Dachsteinhöhlen Bahnhof or the Hallstatt Bahnhof depending on what you want to do.
PROTIP: If traveling from Salzburg, you can store your bags for 2€ at the Salzburg train station for 24 hours!

Five Fingers (Obertraun Dachsteinhöhlen)

Get off at the Obertraun Dachsteinhöhlen Bahnhof. Depending on the time of arrival, you can either walk 40 minutes to the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car station on foot, or one can wait for the 543 Bus, which, unfortunately, only runs every 1.5 hours. If one is starting from Hallstatt, one should take the 543 Bus there. At the cable car station, one should purchase the Yeti Pass which includes the lift and the snowshoes (rented from the Dachstein Krippenstein store) which costs 38€. There are some steep inclines along the path that having snowshoes (and poles) will be very helpful. After riding up two cable cars, one will reach the summit (and waiting in line for about half an hour), simply follow the signs to get there. Depending on how comfortable one becomes with snowshoes, a one-way trip could take 20-40 minutes. The beautiful view in winter is hard to beat, but do dress in many layers, wear gloves and hats, for temperatures there are below freezing, especially with the wind chill! From the cable car station, every 1.5 hours, you can take Bus 543 down into the city for 2.2€ and this will help you explore the town itself. |

Skywalk
If one wants to skip the 5 Fingers Hike, then take the train to Hallstatt Bahnhof followed by the ferry across the lake to the town of Hallstatt for 3€ (one-way). From there, one can take the furnicular up to the beautiful skywalk for 16€.

Classic Village Viewpoint / Postcard Angle
Although people recommend the “Classic Village Viewpoint / Postcard Angle” to take photos, the best photo location, to capture both the town and the lake, is near the “ATO Hallstatt Lahn (Schiffstation)”. However, the town is so small that one can see both sites quite easily. If time permits, I would also recommend walking to the Waterfall Bridge. This location also offers the cheapest/free option for a vantage point of the lake if you are travelling on a budget.
